AAU Girls' Basketball
The AAU Girls' Basketball Program was established in 1972 as part of the AAU Junior Olympic program. Prior to 1972, the AAU Men's and Women's Committee conducted basketball championships, which included a single junior division. The National Championships started in two age divisions (15u &18u) with eight teams in each and have expanded to include (8/u through 19/u) plus the Junior Olympic Games.

"Women in Sports"
In 1996 concerned citizens in the Charlottesville-Albemarle area formed the “Women in Sports” organization to provide leadership and guidance in promoting the future success and recognition of female athletes in the surrounding area. The primary mission of Women in Sports or WinS is to provide leadership and guidance in promoting the future success and recognition of female athletes in the Albemarle/Charlottesville area. WinS helped the Lightning with some recent uniform costs as part of their ongoing efforts. Thanks WinS!
