U12 Team Wins State D2 Title
The Charlottesville Lightning AAU U12 girls’ basketball team won the Division 2 State Tournament in Hampton over the March 26-28 weekend. The team, coached by Kerri Taylor and David Haney, is made up of 8 girls from 7 different Charlottesville and Albemarle County middle schools. The players include 7th graders Kendall Ballard from Buford, Emily Battle from Henley, Meghan Comer from Burley, Megan Duggins from Southerland, Julia Haney from St. Anne’s-Belfield, Heidi Karweick from Southerland, and Molly Shephard from Walton, as well as 6th grader Ashley Taylor from The Covenant School.
With the tourney win, the Charlottesville Lightning not only claimed the Virginia AAU U12 Division 2 title, but also qualified for Nationals which will be held in Minnesota in early July.
13U Team Keeps Rolling
The Charlottesville Lightning 13U team coached by Mike Quillon and Robert Walker has posted a 20-8 record so far this year. The team currently features Alexus Anderson (Jouett), Felicia Garrison (Jouett), Kristin Histand (Burley), Cecilia Richards (Jouett), Allyson Quillon (Jouett), Alexis Walker (Buford), Lexi Brown (Jouett), Renas Gadow (Jouett), and Katurah Johnson (Jouett).
The 13U team won the Outlaws Fall Brawl (defeating the Botetourt Outlows 41-39 in OT for the title) and the Charlottesville Heat Invitational (defeating the Broadway Gobblers 50-39). The Lightning took second place in the Lightning Strikes Invitational and third place in the VBC Spring Fling. Stay tuned for more information on the team's progress!
